Bus from Panzhihua to Lijiang, FINALLY!

IMG_2481

After our little accidental adventure in Panzhihua, Kev and I were so relieved to get on an early bus and be on our way to Lijiang Saturday morning. We got up at 6:30, were on bus 64 by 7:00, and to the station before 7:30. I wrote last time about the whole Leshan/Lijiang mishap, which took up a bit of time. However, when we relized the error we were so grateful not to be heading back to Leshan that we didn’t care about the time that we lost!

Saying goodbye to the hills of Panzhihua at the bus station.

The buses are frequent, so when we got our tickets to Lijiang (¥86/person), we were ushered pretty much straight onto the bus, which we were happy about, but resulted in no breakfast. Next time will definitely pack food.

Our bus was slow as our bus driver was constatly trying to pick up new riders. We stopped at almost every small town to haggle with hitchhikers, but the first opportunity for us to get off didn’t come for about 3 hours. We stopped then for a smoke/restroom break. At this point Kevin and I were pretty starved but the little store didn’t have much in the way of food. The restrooms were really clean, though, and cost  ¥.5 to use.

The ride itself was not extremely comfortable (but what bus ride is?) as the seats were pretty hard and there were a lot of  bumps, twists and turns over huge drops down the mountain. Not for the weak stomached! However, our driver maintained the no smoking rule, which I’ve heard is a rarity, so that was a welcome surprise.

We finally stopped for lunch after about 5 hours at an isolated restaurant on the side of the road. The scenery was gorgeous but the food, unfortunately, was mediocre, and  ¥15/person. Definitely wished I had packed lunch! We had no options, though, so we gobbled it down.

Our bus arrived to Lijiang late, probably as a result of the constant stops. The 7 hour drive ended up being over 8 hours. Once again, the scenery was totally redeeming, and Kevin and I actually quite enjoyed the ride! Late or not, we were totally stoked when we finally arrived in Lijiang. We spent almost 48 hours in transit, but it was worth it. The area we traveled through was gorgeous, we learned a lot about traveling in China (never expect to arrive on time!!), and the rest of our vacation was a blast! Sosososo good!

How to Love (or Not Hate) the Bus System in Chengdu

I’ve been wanting to write about the bus system in Chengdu, as it never ceases to amaze me. That is, my impression of buses in general is that they are …

Phew! I’m relieved to finally be in Lijiang. I thought we’d never get there. It does look beautiful. Did I read correctly…that the greens were the highlight of the meal??? There’s hope for you yet, my sweet. Hugs to both of you.

Hey ek2, I’m guessing that what you want to hear from those of us who read your blog are specific comments on it. Can’t do it yet. For now all I can do is absorb and digest every word and visual you have sent us; but, basically, again, I am just in awe of what you are experiencing and sharing with us, so proud of you for having the guts to do it and so amazed at your communitcation skills. What you are sharing with us is such a gift. Thanks so much to both of you. You are an adorable couple and I love you both. Grandma

P.S. ek2 is my way of acknowledging the names Erin Kelsey and Kevin.

No, we love your comments! Thanks so much for the support. Love you, and love the ek2. At first I wasn’t sure what it was abbreviating (even though it probably should have been obvious), but now that I got it I dig it!

YOU thought we’d never get there?! Haha, I seriously wasn’t sure at times we would! But yes, we made it. I’m about to write about Lijiang here in a bit. It will probably take me awhile to get through cause we did a lot of stuff, so bear with me!

The greens were delish! I don’t know what they did to them but they tasted flavorful and not like rabbit food :)

I am surprised by the fact that it took you so long to get there. I have no idea how the transportation is like there, and happy to know you did enjoy the scenery there, look like the trip totally worth it.

Definitely was! I think traveling this time of year in general is kind of hectic, so we were expecting some delays. No worries. Just glad we got where we needed to go!

  3. Mom and Dad says:

We loved reading all about your trip. Miss you!!

  4. Jenny says:

I’m so glad you two had a blasty blast! Judging from the picture (which are awesome) it looks like the not so comfortable bus ride was worth it! And I’m glad you’re eating/liking your greens kels :)

Funny, the photo of the valley you posted – doesn’t look that different from photos I took of valleys on the bus ride from Cusco to Choquequirao., which was also gorgeous.

    • Erin says: (Author)

I believe it!! I noticed a lot of similarities between towns around Cusco and towns in Asia. Weird cause they’re on opposite sides of the world, but not that weird I guess.

  6. Jean Muehlmeier says:

The scenery is terrific! The food not so sure? Can’t wait to see both of you. How are your jobs going?

    • Erin says: (Author)

Yeah, not my favorite meal! Meh, our jobs are up and down. Overall I would say good though. Thanks for checking in, it’s great to hear from you!
