As I mentioned in my previous post, one of the popular ways to get from Chengdu to Lijiang is to take the train to Panzhihua and then a bus to Lijiang (there is no direct train to from Chengdu to Lijiang, and the direct bus is supposed to be a nightmare). However, I don’t think many people actually intend to stay in Panzhihua. At least, there is no information about it in my guidebook and we didn’t find much of use online. In fact, we were under the impression that Panzhihua was a dumpy little town with not much going on except for the bus and train stations and a bunch of touts to hassle you as you made your way between the two. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case! Panzhihua is a kind of cool town, the only shortcomings for us being a lack of hostels and English speakers (but that’s our fault, we really have to work on our Chinese!).
